Addressing the United Nations General Assembly recently 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai said, “One book, one teacher, one child, can change the world.”
Last week, Yousafzai was pulled out of her chemistry class in England by a teacher to tell her she was indeed changing the world. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting education of girls everywhere, even while under siege by the Taliban who wounded her severely.
I wonder how many high school teachers or principals know who this remarkable Muslim young woman is, and even more I wonder if they interrupted classes to announce the news over intercoms to their students who surely must be seeking inspiration too. I hope so.
