The Secretary of State will conduct a recount in the state Senate District 11 election in which the Democratic candidate lost to the Republican incumbent by 115 votes of the more than 18,000 votes cast, a margin of 0.54 percent.
Democrat Jonathan Fulford requested a recount after losing to Senate Republican Leader Michael Thibodeau, 9,064 to 8,949, according to unofficial results in the Waldo County district.
Political newcomer Fulford, a Monroe resident, said he requested the recount to ensure a fair tally “in light of the severe weather and power outages across the county and in honor of all the people who came out under these especially challenging circumstances to cast their ballots.”
The requests for recounts must be made by Wednesday.
The Department of the Secretary of State said the Senate District 11 recount will be conducted Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. in the Florian Room of the Department of Public Safety building in Augusta.
Thibodeau, of Winterport, was first elected as a state representative for the same community and served as Republican minority leader in the Democrat-controlled Senate while a senator for District 23, now called District 11.
