AUGUSTA — Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin is backing a bill to roll back part of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

The measure that the 2nd District congressman is co-sponsoring would repeal the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act. That is a key component of the law that requires individuals to buy coverage or pay a fine.

Poliquin said in a statement that hard-working families shouldn’t be fined for not buying a plan that “doesn’t fit their budget or health care needs.”

Some conservative groups criticized Poliquin last week after he didn’t vote along with the majority of his caucus to repeal the health care law. The freshman lawmaker says he believes that a “free-market alternative” replacement needs to be developed before the law in its entirety can be repealed.
