The Koussinoc Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter of Augusta sponsored the annual American History Essay Contest in February which is observed as American History Month nation-wide. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students in three local schools, St. Michael School in Augusta, Windsor Middle School and Winthrop Middle School, participated.

This year’s topic, chosen by the National Society DAR, was “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island.” After researching the topic, the students were to describe what a child would do traveling through Ellis Island in 1892.

Members of Koussinoc, students, parents, teachers and the essay contest judges met at the VA Maine healthcare Systems-Togus facility and veterans and VA staff were invited to join in the celebration.

Koussinoc Chapter finalists in the essay contest were as follows:

Eighth grade

Gabrielle Low, from St. Michael School, placed first. Hagen Wallace of St. Michael School placed second.
