Louisa C. Nyhus, Waterville Senior High School senior, has been selected to receive the 2015 Maine Principals’ Association Award, given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic excellence, outstanding school citizenship, and leadership, according to a WSHS news release.
Nyhus, daughter of Gail Carlson and Philip Nyhus, resides in Waterville with her parents and brother Soren. She plans to attend a liberal arts school to study computer sciences. She has been an active member of her school community as class vice president for four years, as vice president of Tri-M Music Honor Society, as treasurer of National Honor Society, and as a member of the yearbook staff, Science Olympiad Team, Math Team, Green Team and Homeroom Buddies. Her musical talents have led her to participate in the school musicals, the Colby College Symphony Orchestra, the Mid Maine Youth Orchestra and the All State Orchestra.
As a student athlete, she has been a member of the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams. Nyhus received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, the Bowdoin College Book Award and a prestigious Renaissance Award for Academics. Her love of music has led her to do many hours of community service at Albert S. Hall School helping fifth-grade strings students. She has also volunteered at Waterville Junior High School with the seventh- and eighth-grade strings program. Her proudest accomplishment is being selected for the All State Orchestra two years running.
When asked to name one thing that most people do not know about her, she said she loves old movies, especially those of Alfred Hitchcock.
Nyhus, and Principal Don Reiter, will join other award winners and their principals at a Maine Principals’ Association honors luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.
Honorees will be recognized with an individual plaque and the chance to win one of 10 $1,000 scholarships given in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Maine Principals’ Association. The Maine Principals’ Association Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
