WINSLOW — A drug overdose death on Monday involving a 40-year-old woman at a Clinton Avenue apartment is under investigation by local police.
Winslow Police Chief Shawn O’Leary said Tuesday that officers and emergency medical personnel were sent about 5:30 p.m. Monday to the residence at 84 Clinton Ave. after a report of an unresponsive woman.
Emergency crews determined that the woman had died, O’Leary said. Police didn’t release the woman’s identity.
Officers recovered what they said was a usable amount of narcotics at the residence, and the death is being treated as an accidental overdose, according to O’Leary, who declined to specify what drugs were involved.
Several other adults and a juvenile were at the residence when police arrived, he added. O’Leary said the people, including the juvenile, were relatives of the woman, but he would not specify the relationships.
Winslow police are working with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency to identify the source of the drugs, but the death is not being investigated as a homicide and no criminal charges are pending, he said.
An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday by the state’s chief medical examiner in Augusta, but a toxicology report might be unavailable for up to 30 days, according to O’Leary.
O’Leary said his department is seeing more and more calls involving drugs.
