The number of domestic fish stocks listed as overfished or subject to overfishing has dropped to an all-time low since 1997, when NOAA began tracking stock status, according to the “2014 Status of U.S. Fisheries” report to Congress released on Tuesday.
Gulf of Maine haddock, North Atlantic albacore tuna and bluefin tuna in the western Atlantic were among six stocks that have been removed from the list of species considered “overfished.” The other stocks are: snowy grouper on the southern Atlantic Coast, gag grouper in the South Atlantic and the jack fish in the Gulf of Mexico.
The report, produced annually, highlights the United States’ progress toward sustainably managing fish stocks.
