After an 18-mile pursuit from Windsor to Newcastle, two state troopers ran down a Vassalboro man’s truck after it was disabled on a rough camp road and arrested him on Saturday night.
Logan Nelson, 25, of Vassalboro, was charged with eluding an officer after the chase, in which speeds reached 95 mph on State Route 17, said Sgt. Patrick Hood of the Maine State Police in a news release. Nelson was on probation for conspiracy to traffick cocaine, and Hood said that he admitted violating probation by drinking that night and trying to evade police because he didn’t want to go back to prison.
Hood said the chase started at 10:12 p.m. on Saturday, when he and a trooper were investigating a different suspicious vehicle at the corner of routes 17 and 32 in Windsor. That’s when Hood said Nelson’s pickup truck came to the intersection and squealed its tires for an extended amount of time. The troopers started chasing Nelson, and Hood said his truck was weaving and straddling the centerline. The pursuit continued onto routes 32, 215 and 194 to Newcastle.
Off of Happy Valley Road there, Hood said Nelson’s truck went onto a camp road, which was impassable without damage to a vehicle. The troopers stopped their car and Hood said they ran after the truck for about a mile, keeping it in sight as the truck crashed over downed logs and rocks. Eventually, Hood said it was disabled because of damage and caught Nelson and a passenger, a man who wasn’t arrested, around 11 p.m.
Nelson was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. Bail information wasn’t available on Monday afternoon.
