The Sheepscot Wellspring Land Alliance will sponsor opportunities to learn about frogs on Saturday, May 2.
FrogWatch USA training is set for 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Liberty Library. Expert naturalist and frog enthusiast Larkspur Morton will teach participants to identify local frog species and will present information about amphibian ecology and current threats posed to their populations, according to a news release from the alliance. Then she’ll share how participants can help by becoming citizen scientists.
FrogWatch volunteers can learn about the calls of local frogs and toads during spring and summer. The information can be submitted online, and will used in regional and national studies that measure changes in amphibian populations. To sign up for this free workshop, contact Morton at larkspurmtn@gmail.com or 589-3230. Preregistration is recommended and all ages are encouraged.
The second event is a Vernal Pool Exploration from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Montville. Local amphibian experts Morton and Buck O’Herin will lead participants for a family friendly springtime exploration of a vernal pool and protected wetland and their amphibian residents. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a good flashlight/headlamp and wear footwear appropriate for wet areas. Meet at the Anne Arnold trailhead, Halldale Road (between Route 220 and Burnham Hill Road). No registration required.
The Vernal Pool Exploration is part of a series of events hosted by local conservation organizations.
