AUGUSTA — Volunteers of all ages celebrated the 45th anniversary of Earth Day by participating in an hour-long community cleanup event.
The Clean & Green Augusta Earth Day Celebration, hosted by the Augusta Downtown Alliance’s Design Committee and the city of Augusta, brought together more than 20 volunteers who worked to clean up Market Square and Riverfront Park, according to a news release from the design committee.
“I’m always impressed by how much a small group of dedicated volunteers can accomplish in a short amount of time, and our love and passion for keeping Augusta beautiful while celebrating Earth Day was evident,” Julie Moser, chairwoman of the Alliance’s Design Committee, said in the release.
The annual event received support and in-kind donations by the city of Augusta and Crisis and Counseling Centers. Volunteers and passersby also had a chance to learn more about Augusta’s new pilot recycling program from ecomaine staff, according to the release.
Augusta became a Main Street Program in June 2013. “As part of Main Street Maine’s approach to downtown revitalization, our committee’s mission is to help get ‘Main Street’ into top physical shape and creating an inviting atmosphere. We have exciting plans for the year ahead, and we encourage anyone who wants to help us achieve our mission to join our committee,” Moser said in the release.
The Augusta Downtown Alliance’s Design Committee meets the first Tuesday of each month at 5:15 p.m. at the ADA office at 295 Water St., suite 102.
