STONEHILL COLLEGE
EASTON, Mass. — Augusta native Jenna Fongemie, a member of the class of 2016 at Stonehill College, has been named a Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience Summer 2015 Scholar. The SURE program provides students with an opportunity to perform significant, publishable research under the guidance of an experienced faculty researcher at the college, according to a news release from the college.
Fongemie, a biology major, will work with assistant professor of biology Nicholas Block and one other Stonehill student on “A Resurvey of Odonata Diversity and Phenology in the Blue Hills.”
Both students will be responsible for designing and implementing a survey strategy and comparing the data collected to White’s results. They plan to use the information they gain to create a dataset that could eventually lead to a science research journal publication.
The group will conduct a survey of odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) at Ponkapoag Pond and the surrounding area near Milton, Mass., and compare it to results of surveys conducted by Hal White from 1966 to 1971. They hypothesize that the number of species has decreased because of development in the Blue Hills and that they may see the presence of new southerly species due to climate change.
