Kents Hill School students will be able to eat in a new dining hall thanks to a $3.5 million matching grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation.
The private high school in Readfield announced its latest gift from the foundation in a news release issued Thursday.
“With the support of the Harold Alfond Foundation, Kents Hill will be able to complete a project that will have a direct and positive effect on our entire community,” said Patrick McInerney, head of school, in a prepared statement. “Our community is grateful for the foundation’s support and all of the generous donors who came together to help make this a reality.”
The new 14,700-square-foot dining hall is to be located near the school’s current dining hall.
It has been designed by Stephen Blatt Architects, of Portland, and will be built by Peter Warren Construction, of Freeport. The building also will have a student art gallery and offer views to the west toward Mount Washington.
The news release indicated that the Alfond Foundation might consider a further $2.5 million contribution to the school at a later date.
The Harold Alfond Foundation invests in education, health care, youth development and other causes.
Kents Hill School already boasts the Harold and Ted Alfond Athletic Center, which opened in 2001.
