A 67-year-old Clinton man who had been arrested last year on child pornography charges died early Tuesday at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.
Robert Lewis had served four months of a three-year sentence handed down in March by Kennebec County Superior Court for possession of sexually explicit material of a minor under 12. He died about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
In April, there was a motion from Lewis for a medical furlough, which the court denied, according to Kennebec County Superior Court records.
A spokesman for the Maine State Police said there was no indication of foul play. The case was referred to the state police and attorney general’s office, and the Department of Corrections would not provide more information about the death.
Lewis, who lived at 15 Diamond Ave. in Clinton, was arrested in May 2014 on a charge of possession of sexually explicit material depicting a minor and pleaded guilty on March 11. He was sentenced to serve three years immediately, followed by six years of probation. He also was ordered to register as a sex offender for 25 years.
Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Day wrote in court documents that Lewis was arrested after a forensic examination of his computer uncovered explicit photos of children who investigators believe range in age from 4 to 16.
Lewis’ mobile home in a trailer park was about a quarter-mile from Clinton Elementary School.
Day arrested Lewis while investigating another complaint against him. Sheriff’s deputies seized Lewis’ computer tower from his home in 2013, according to court documents.
