The U.S. Small Business Administration is awarding $161,000 to the Maine International Trade Center in Portland to help Maine’s small businesses boost exports.

The federal agency announced the award on Monday.

The funding comes from the State Trade and Export Promotion grant initiative, which provides funding to states and U.S. territories over three years to help them increase the number of businesses that export, as well as the value of exports by small businesses. Congress created the initiative as part of the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010.

The Maine International Trade Center is a quasi-state agency that was created by the Maine Legislature 19 years ago to expand Maine’s economy through increased international trade in goods and services.
