WATERVILLE — A man accused of hitting a woman in the head with a hammer was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with felony assault.
Kevin Henderson, 40, of Temple Street, was booked at the Waterville Police Department shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday and charged with aggravated assault.
According to Sgt. Lincoln Ryder, Waterville police received a 911 call from a female caller at 3:47 a.m. Saturday, but she hung up. Officers eventually were able to connect with the woman at Autumn Street, in the city’s South End.
When officers arrived at the location, Henderson approached them, Ryder said.
The woman told officers that Henderson had assaulted her, and she had armed herself with the hammer for protection, according to Ryder. Henderson took the hammer away from the woman and allegedly hit her in the forehead with it. Officers Cody Vigue and Robert Bouley were able to corroborate the woman’s account based on her injuries. Ryder said he did not know the extent of the woman’s injuries but believed she was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Henderson and the woman knew one another but were not domestic partners, Ryder added.
Henderson was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta, Ryder said. His bail was set at $500 cash and he has a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 23.
Aggravated assault is a class B crime with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
