BANGOR — The Kennebec Journal and the Morning Sentinel staff won 20 individual awards, presented Saturday at the Maine Press Association’s annual conference and banquet Saturday night.
In the Morning Sentinel advertising department, Barbara Hendsbee won Advertising Person of the Year and Bridget Campbell has won the”Unsung Hero” award. Morning Sentinel photographer David Leaming won first place for a spot news photo of Skowhegan Fire Chief Shawn Howard carrying a young girl who survived a car crash Jan. 12 off Norridgewock Road in Skowhegan.
In addition, Morning Sentinel reporter Rachel Ohm won first place for a food/feature story about Greaney’s Turkey Farm in Mercer, where a 17-year-old took over a majority of farm operations along with her brother while their father battled mantle cell lymphoma.
Douglas Rooks took first place for opinion columnist in his writings for the Kennebec Journal and the Morning Sentinel.
Portland Press Herald reporter Scott Dolan was named Journalist of the Year. The Press Herald was the winner of the Freedom of Information Award for daily/weekend newspapers.
Earlier in the day, the press association inducted three new members into its Hall of Fame: Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram writer and columnist Bill Nemitz; Bob Kalish, formerly of The Times Record in Brunswick; and Lou Ureneck, who worked at the Press Herald, the Evening Express in Portland and the Maine Sunday Telegram.
