Police investigating a reported stabbing Monday in Hallowell say there is no reason for heightened safety concerns.
Interim Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon said investigators are “trying to corroborate” the man’s story.
“There is no danger to the public,” Reardon said.
Meanwhile, the man who on Monday walked into a Water Street barber shop claiming he had been stabbed is expected to make a full recovery. Reardon said his injuries were superficial.
The alleged stabbing was reported to police around 2:50 p.m. Monday after the bleeding man walked into Dom’s Barber Shop, barber Julie Keithley said. The man told Keithley and about four customers that he had been stabbed in the Hallowell Cemetery about a half mile away on Water Street near the Augusta city line.
“He just walked in,” Keithley said Monday. “He asked if he could use the phone.”
However, Hallowell police Chief Eric Nason said Monday evening that “if there was a crime that occurred,” it apparently took place in Farmingdale. Nason said his department was working with the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office to determine exactly what happened and where.
Keithley said the man, whom she gauged to be in his 20s, was bleeding from a stab wound in his neck and another in his abdomen.
The man was taken by ambulance to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
