NEW SHARON — The town will hold a special town meeting Friday night to ask voters to approve funding to buy a new computer system to replace one that crashed last month.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Town Office.

Registered voters will be asked to approve using up to $10,000 from the town’s surplus for cost of retrieving data and the purchase of a new server and backup system, according to the meeting warrant.

The request for a new system comes in the wake of the town’s server crashing on Oct. 25, resulting in the loss of two months’ worth of data, which computer technicians have since retrieved. It is not clear in the warrant what the nature of the data lost was, and town officials were not available Thursday to elaborate.

After the system crashed, the town hired a Wilton computer service company, Expenet, to scan and retrieve files from the hard drives. The files were recovered, but they were corrupted and therefore unusable.

The hard drives were then sent to a New Hampshire company that was able to retrieve usable data from the corrupted files.

According to the warrant, the Board of Selectmen will use the money, if approved, to set up a new server and system, including staff to manage the system, to ensure that another crash is prevented.
