LEWISTON – Lewiston Mayor Bob Macdonald and challenger Ben Chin will square off in a debate at City Hall in advance of their upcoming runoff election.

The debate is scheduled for Thursday. The runoff is coming up on Dec. 8. The Sun Journal reports the format will give the two candidates a chance to rebut each other’s answers.

Chin had the most votes of the mayoral candidates in the Nov. 3 election, but did not get more than 50 percent of the vote. The charter requires a majority winner. Macdonald came in 566 votes behind Chin. Three other candidates also ran.

The mayoral campaign has been contentious at times. Lewiston building owner Joe Dunne caused controversy by putting up signs that said “Don’t vote for Ho Chi Chin” before the election.
