FORT MYERS, Fla. — The University of Maine women’s basketball team held Louisiana State to its lowest point total of the year and a 27 percent field goal mark as the Black Bears defeated LSU 52-41 in the fifth place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Chantel Charles scored a game-high 14 points and Liz Wood added 12 points and nine rebounds for Maine (5-3). Mikaela Gustafsson and Sigi Koizar each scored nine points for the Black Bears, who were 20 for 36 (56 percent) from the field as a team.
The Black Bears outscored LSU 18-7 in the second quarter, closing the final seven minutes of the period on a 15-4 run to take a 30-16 halftime lead. Maine led by as much as 16 points in the third quarter.
COLBY 62, BATES 57: Desiree Smith scored 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field to lead the Mules to the non-conference win over the Bobcats in Lewiston on Sunday.
Colby (4-0) led 43-40 after three quarters and tried to pull away, going up 51-42 on a Smith layup, two more by Carylanne Wolfington and a basket by Mia Diplock. A three-point play by Bernadette Connors pulled Bates (0-4) to within four points at 51-47.
Wolfington, a Hall-Dale graduate, had 13 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Mules. Diplock, a Cony grad, added 11 points, three assists and four steals for Colby.
Allie Coppola led the Bobcats with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
COLBY 63, REGIS 62: Ryan Jann’s 3-pointer with two seconds left gave the Mules the non-conference win in Weston, Massachusetts.
Sam Jean-Gilles made a free throw with 10 seconds left to give Regis (2-3) a 62-60 lead. Jann’s game-winning shot came with an assist from Luke Westman.
Jann scored seven points for the Mules (3-1). Chris Hudnut led Colby with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Westman added 10 points and five assists.
Jean-Gilles led Regis with 19 points.
MAINE 81, CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 74: Kevin Little scored 19 points to lead the Black Bears to the win in New Britain, Connecticut.
The Black Bears (2-3) led 40-31 at the half and while CCSU rallied to take a lead late in the second half, it was short-lived. Lavar Harewood’s layup with 3:38 left in the game gave Maine the lead for good at 71-70.
Till Gloger added 15 points for Maine. Ausin Nehls and Khalen Cumberlander each scored 15 points for the Blue Devils (0-5).
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY
COLBY 5, ENDICOTT 2: Cam MacDonald had a goal and an assists to lead the Mules over the Gulls at Sid Watson Arena in Brunswick.
Colby (1-2-1) pulled away with three goals in the second period. Nick O’Connor’s goal with an assist from MacDonald put Colby ahead for good 8:58 into the second.
Emerson Verrier made 30 saves for the win. Kevin Aldridge made 28 stops for Endicott (5-2-2).
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY
UMASS-BOSTON 4, COLBY 2: The Beacons scored a pair of goals midway through the first period to take control on the way to the win at Alfond Rink in Waterville.
Lizzie Averson and Maren Brown scored less than a minute apart to give UMass-Boston (5-4-0) a 2-0 lead.
Bri Davis and Sasha Fritts scored for Colby (2-2). Jess Thulin made 19 saves for the Mules. Rachel Myette made 22 stops for the Beacons.
