The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a multi-year deal with free agent outfielder Chris Young, according to media reports. Young, 32, must first pass a physical.
Young gives Boston a fourth outfielder to complement Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr. His presence is insurance for the Sox, who experienced hot and cold streaks from Castillo and Bradley.
A 10-year veteran, Young played last season with the New York Yankees, batting .252 with 14 home runs and a .773 OPS in 140 games. He played all three outfield positions for the Yankees.
Young can serve as a platoon player, especially against left-handed pitching. He batted .327 with seven homers and a .972 OPS against lefties in 2015, but only .182 against right-handers.
In nine games last season at Fenway Park, Young batted .350 with three doubles and a home run.
He was a National League All-Star with Arizona in 2010, when he hit 27 homers and had 91 RBI. Young, a career .235 hitter, also played for Oakland and the New York Mets.
