To their credit, the Senate and House are finally acknowledging by way of resolutions that some kind of action should be taken regarding climate change. However, they have not enacted legislation that would generate action. We need a Todd Beamer in Congress — a decisive leader who will call out, “Let’s roll!”

A huge number of scientists are in favor of pricing carbon. George Shultz has proposed legislation that would do that — create a 100 percent revenue-neutral fee/dividend policy that would lead to not only a reduction in carbon emissions but to an improved economy.

Citizen’s Climate Lobby has long been promoting Shultz’s proposal, but Congress has thus far turned a deaf ear, dithering while countless lives are lost in climate change-influenced extreme weather events. If Beamer and other Flight 93 passengers had likewise dithered, some of the very congressmen who are now deadlocked would have died in D.C., as Flight 93 would likely have crashed there rather than in a Pennsylvania field.

I ask Sens. Collins and King to assume leadership regarding action on climate change: Sponsor legislation to price carbon. Tell your colleagues, “Let’s roll!”
