The driver of a Poland Spring Water Co. truck was unharmed Wednesday when the truck rolled over just before 1 a.m. on the shoulder of Route 27 in New Vineyard.

Kevin Couillard, 40, of Gray, was driving the tractor-trailer south on Route 27 near Holley Road when a sedan traveling north reportedly crossed the center line. When Gray maneuvered the truck to avoid colliding with the vehicle, the truck left the road, striking several trees before rolling over onto the passenger’s side, according to Maine State Police.

Couillard told police that the sedan was “well into his lane of travel,” Trooper Reid Bond said Wednesday.

State police responded to the 12:54 a.m. call but were unable to find the sedan. Couillard said the car did not stop after crossing into his lane of travel. Police are working to identify and locate the sedan’s driver, Bond said.

Couillard was hauling 8,200 gallons of water from the Poland Spring facility in Kingfield at the time of the accident. The crash caused some of the water to drain from the back of the tractor-trailer, Bond said.

In the muddy conditions, Collins Enterprises, of Wilton, attempted for more than an hour following the crash to upright and remove the vehicle but was unsuccessful and decided to return during daylight hours Wednesday. Assisted by the New Vineyard Fire Department, Collins Enterprises was able to remove the truck around midday Wednesday.

Bond said the remaining water was drained from the truck to make extrication possible.
