FARMINGTON — The Mt. Blue and Lawrence boys lacrosse teams had little to celebrate last season, with each squad winning just one of its 12 games.
What a difference a season makes.
The Cougars and Bulldogs enjoyed strong starts to the season and found themselves smack dab in the middle of a tight Class B North playoff race when they faced off against each other Tuesday in the second of two regular season meetings.
Mt. Blue won the first game — 8-7 on April 27 in Fairfield — but Lawrence evened the series Tuesday with a 10-6 victory.
Connor Martin scored six goals and added an assist to lead Lawrence. Gunner McAllister chipped in with three goals and four assists, while Parker Towne also scored. Aidan Strickland had 15 saves for the Bulldogs as well.
The Bulldogs (5-3) pushed their winning streak to three games and reached double digits in goals for the first time this season. Lawrence is in prime position to reach the postseason, although it will face tough competition to close out the regular season with games against Camden, Cony, Lincoln and Winslow.
If the Cougars (3-4) are going to make a run at a Class B North playoff berth they will have to do so on the road — their final three regular season games are at Erskine, Camden Hills and Oxford Hills.
Still it’s been quite a turnaround for both teams.
Mt. Blue opened the season 1-2, including a tough 13-1 loss to Camden Hills, but won two of its last three games prior to the showdown with Lawrence.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have won three consecutive games that were decided by four goals or less.
