Franklin Memorial Auxiliary donates $19,000 to help buy X-ray system

A donation to Franklin Memorial Hospital by the hospital’s auxiliary help support the purchase of a new X-ray system that uses low-dose radiation to measure bone density, the Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary said in a news release.

Dawn Girardin, auxiliary president, presented Wayne Bennett, FMH chief financial officer, with $19,000 to go toward the purchase of the Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry system.

Tammy Frost, a radiation therapist with the the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, who performs mammography, radiography and bone densitometry examinations, told the auxiliary at its June 1 meeting that the DXA scanner is an essential tool in osteoporosis diagnosis and management, fracture risk assessment and monitoring response to therapy, the release said.

The hospital’s gift shop is the auxiliary’s major fundraiser in its mission to provide financial support to the hospital. The auxiliary also raises money by way of membership dues, raffles, memorial stones, food and book sales, special events and the Remembrance Tree during the holidays.

The auxiliary’s West Central Maine Health Careers Scholarship Program also awarded $600 scholarships to nursing students Althea Mae Drummond, of Livermore Falls; Shawnee Mae Ellis, of New Vineyard; Amanda Cote, of Strong; Lauren Farrington, of Jay; Jennifer Nichols, of Jay; Cassidy Mosher, of Temple; and Randi Duguay, of Jay.

Waterville Creates! gets $1,000 grant from Bangor Savings Bank

Bangor Savings Bank has donated $1,000 from its Community Matters More program to Waterville Creates!, a nonprofit corporation that supports the arts in central Maine.

The money will be used for renovating the new Common Street Arts gallery and studio space at The Center at 93 Main St., according to a news release from Waterville Creates!

“We are incredibly thankful for the ongoing support of the people of Maine and Bangor Savings Bank,” said Waterville Creates! President Larry Sterrs in the news release. “These funds will go a long way in helping us further our mission to offer a more diverse and accessible array of arts and cultural programing, education, and entertainment to the greater Waterville community.”

According to the bank, Maine residents cast thousands of votes during the 2016 Community Matters More campaign; through the program, the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation will donate $100,000 to 68 Maine-based nonprofit organizations throughout the state, the release said.

Camden National’s foundation seeks nominees for nonprofit board member awards

Camden National Bank, through The Bank of Maine Charitable Foundation, is accepting nominations for the 2016 Leaders & Luminaries Award competition. The statewide search honors four of Maine’s leading nonprofit board members and presents them with cash awards for their organizations. Leaders & Luminaries recognizes board members who have effectively used inspiration, creativity and ingenuity in board governance and whose contributions have led to the organization’s growth, successful transition or financial stability. Each of the selected leaders will be presented with cash prizes totaling $20,000.

The Leaders & Luminaries Award competition is open to any board director of a 501(c)(3) organization based in Maine who can demonstrate how inspiration, creativity and ingenuity in governance has led to his or her organization’s success. Four awards totaling $20,000, presented through The Bank of Maine Charitable Foundation, will be awarded to this year’s winners at a special ceremony held during the Maine Association of Nonprofits Executive Leadership Forum, “Building Board Engagement,” on Nov. 10 at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.

An independent selection committee, appointed by Camden National Bank, will select the four winners. Each Leaders & Luminaries award winner will receive $5,000 for his or her nonprofit organization. The deadline for entries is Sept. 2.

Team Evergreen Dental to back Relay for Life in Augusta area

Evergreen Dental Associates has created Team Evergreen Dental to support Relay for Life of the Augusta area by participating in the event, which will be held from noon to 11 p.m. June 18 at the Windsor Fairgrounds.

Team Evergreen Dental is partnering with Cook Orthodontics, increasing the team to more than 20 members and raising over $1,800 for the fundraising event to end cancer in the community. Relay for Life unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight.
