Winthrop voters overwhelmingly approved the town’s $11.22 million school budget Tuesday, which is up 4 percent from the current year’s $10.82 million budget.

A total of 822 votes were cast, with 701, or 85 percent, supporting the budget. Just 121 people voted against the budget.

The biggest increase is the $170,000 jump in regular instruction costs to $4.2 million, which includes money for new textbooks, the expansion of elective classes and a new Spanish language program.

Local taxpayers will be responsible for $6.21 million in school costs. Winthrop’s councilors approved the school budget with little discussion during a meeting last week.
