An astronomically high tide produced some minor flooding Tuesday in coastal areas of southern Maine, including Pine Point in Scarborough.
The afternoon high tide, pushed higher by a full moon, left the Clambake Seafood Restaurant at Pine Point surrounded by water. The restaurant, near the Nonesuch River and the Scarborough Marsh, closed for the season Sunday.
Eric Sinsabaugh, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, said a daylong “onshore flow” pushed water inland, causing splashover in some areas.
In Portland, the high tide peaked around 1 p.m. and brought water levels to 12.2 feet, 2 inches above flood stage.
Sinsabaugh said the full moon is “waning,” so tides should return to normal levels by Wednesday. The next super high tide cycle could begin Nov. 12.
