An Anson man was arrested Thursday on felony charges in connection with a burglary and theft of cash from the Anson Town Office, police said.

Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said Peter Mcanistan, 38, was taken into custody after a search of his home Thursday on Main Street in Anson. The burglary was captured on a recently installed video surveillance system.

Mcanistan is charged with burglary, a class C felony; theft, also class C; and unlawful possession of oxycodone, a class C felony. He is scheduled for arraignment Feb. 9 in Skowhegan District Court.

Lancaster said a burglary was reported Dec. 20 at the Anson Town Office on Kennebec Street. The break-in had happened the previous night, Dec. 19, and money had been stolen from a secured room inside the Town Office, he said.

About $3,100 had been stolen, according to Lancaster, who said forcible entry and exit were made through the rear door.

“The Town Office had recently installed a surveillance system in the building and the burglary was captured on video,” the sheriff said. “The investigation revealed that the individual remained in the building for a lengthy period of time before leaving.”

Lancaster said deputies from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office were able to identify Mcanistan from the video surveillance. Deputies also were able to secure additional evidence that placed Mcanistan at the scene of the burglary.

Lancaster said he doesn’t think the burglary is related to a break-in and theft of a coin machine Saturday just across the river on Main Street in Madison, but investigators are not ruling out a connection.

Mcanistan also is charged with unlawful possession of oxycodone as a result of investigators finding nonprescribed oxycodone pills in his home that he admitted were his, Lancaster said.
