A Rhode Island man who is accused of forcing his way into a Sidney home on Sunday night remained hospitalized Wednesday after being shot in the chest by the homeowner’s son.
The medical condition of Dreaquan Foster, 21, was not immediately available, but Kennebec County Sheriff Ken Mason said Wednesday that Foster is under 24-hour guard in the intensive care unit of MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.
Foster does not pose a threat to the public, Mason said, and he will be charged with crimes and arraigned upon his release from MaineGeneral.
Police say Foster was shot after he knocked on the door of a Lyons Road home Sunday evening, asking to use the phone. He pushed his way into the home after being told to leave by 84-year-old Audrey Hewett. Audrey Hewett fled to her bedroom and called her son, Eric Hewett, 47, and he rushed from his home next door to help his mother.
After fighting with Foster, Eric Hewett shot the Rhode Island man in the chest with his handgun, Mason said in a news release the next day.
At some point, a bay window on the front of the home was broken. It was covered with a tarp on Monday.
Eric Hewett suffered a head injury during the fight, and both men were taken to hospitals for medical treatment. Audrey Hewett was uninjured.
Eric Hewett wasn’t immediately available for comment Wednesday, as he had just been discharged from Maine Medical Center in Portland. He is expected to recover fully, his wife, Patty Hewett, said by email.
It was not immediately clear whether Foster has been in the Augusta hospital since Sunday or whether he received treatment elsewhere. On Monday, Mason said both Foster and Hewett were taken to MaineGeneral, but a spokeswoman for the hospital has declined to confirm whether either man was admitted as a patient, so no further information about his condition is available.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the ranch-style home shortly after 7 p.m. and remained there for about 12 hours. Not long after they left, neighbor Bob Stewart returned home after a night away to find a package delivered to him by Amazon had been tampered with.
Lyons Road is in a rural area off Interstate 95 in Sidney, just north of Augusta.
Both Hewett and Foster were treated by the Sidney Fire and Rescue Crew, and Delta Ambulance took them both to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, according to Mason.
