Maine Credit Union League presents annual awards, makes donation

As part of its recent 79th annual Meeting & Convention held in Portland, the Maine Credit Union League presented its annual awards to four people who, combined, have nearly 120 years of experience with Maine’s credit unions, including one winner from a credit union that serves the Augusta-Waterville area.

Stacy Dow, of Winthrop, won the group’s Diane L. Oceretko People Helping People Award. Dow is the executive assistant at the Maine State Credit Union, based in Augusta, with a branch in Waterville. The award is meant to recognize outstanding community service by an individual in the Maine CU System.

In a news release, Tucker Cole, president and CEO of the credit union, described Dow, a 12-year CU employee, as “having contagious enthusiasm and passion for the cause of ending hunger. Her commitment has helped our credit union alone raise more than $500,000 for the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger in the past ten years.”

More than 850 credit union representatives and guests attended this year’s convention, held in May in Portland, the largest crowd in more than two decades.

Also, the credit unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger recently presented five checks for $1,000 each to Maine’s Area Agencies on Aging Meals on Wheels programs in recognition of National Older Americans Month. The presentation took place at the Spectrum Generations Hallowell location, where the money was presented to a representative from each agency, including the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, Spectrum Generations, SeniorsPlus, Eastern Area Agency on Aging and Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, meaning seniors in every region of the state will benefit from this contribution. The money, part of the nearly $675,000 raised by Maine’s credit unions for ending hunger in 2016, will help provide more than 20,000 meals to Maine’s seniors.

Maine EMS board confers honor on 30-year employee

NorthStar employee Carol Pillsbury received the Maine EMS Lifetime Achievement Award during a recent Emergency Medical Services Week in Farmington.

The award, presented by the Maine EMS board, is conferred for extensive involvement with EMS in Maine for at least 10 years — in Pillsbury’s case, 30 years — and consistently performing above and beyond expectations in system development, patient care, service involvement and community involvement. Pillsbury was nominated by fellow colleague and paramedic Cassandra Purington, who cited her outstanding contributions and abundant accolades to describe her mentor.

NorthStar EMS is the regional ambulance service operated by Franklin Memorial Hospital.
