Firefighters from several area communities, along with members of the Maine Forest Service, were off Tuesday afternoon at a woods fire in a remote section of Sibley Pond at the Canaan/Pittsfield town line.

A firefighter at the scene said there was no town road access to the fire. A helicopter was dispatched to the area.

A dispatcher at the Somerset County Regional Communications Center in Skowhegan confirmed that firefighters were having a hard time getting to the fire because of its remote location.

Chatter on Central Maine Facebook Fire Alert suggested that the fire was accessible by boat and possibly by camp roads near Loon Road in Canaan. Hartland and St. Albans units were activated as well.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by forest rangers.

Junior Firefighter Devin Plant posted in the Facebook fire alert page that the fire scene was accessible only by boat. He said crews from Hartland, Canaan, Pittsfield and St. Albans assisted, with the Maine Forest Service providing helicopter support as well as rangers on the ground. Some of the fire crews cleared the scene about 4:15 p.m.

Another post indicated that a shed and another building had been damaged, but the fire’s cause was unknown.
