A 58-year-old construction worker for Pike Industries suffered serious injuries Tuesday morning when he was struck by a passing motorist on the Maine Turnpike in Gray who drifted into the breakdown lane.

Danny Lowe of Yarmouth was standing near the cab of his pickup truck near mile marker 62 in the northbound breakdown lane around 9:50 a.m. when a car driven by Alphie Lambert, 60, of Biddeford struck a Pike Industries vehicle and then struck Lowe, Maine State Police said.

Lowe was listed in critical condition Tuesday night at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

State police said the impact threw Lowe into the travel lane, but he was able to crawl back into the breakdown lane to safety.

Lambert stopped after the crash and was interviewed by police. He was issued a citation for failing to obey the state’s “move over” law, which requires motorists to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles or construction vehicles with their lights on.
