WINTHROP — In a battle of dual threat quarterbacks, Keegan Choate came out on top.

Choate passed for 168 yards, while rushing for 73 and accounted for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) to lead the Winthrop/Monmouth football team to a 27-18 win over Old Orchard Beach on Friday night at Maxwell Field.

Choate was aided in the ground game by running back Kane Gould, who had 64 yards rushing on 15 carries.

“We pulled through,” Winthrop/Monmouth coach Dave St. Hilaire said. “It was kind of a sloppy game but we stayed together.”

Down 10-8 at halftime, Choate led the Ramblers (1-1) back in the third quarter thanks to a 22-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jevin Smith. Four minutes later, Winthrop/Monmouth took the lead for good when Choate connected with Greg Fay for 39 yards on a seam route for a touchdown. The extra point by Ryan Baird gave the Ramblers a 21-18 lead.

The Winthrop/Monmouth defense kept Old Orchard Beach in check throughout the fourth quarter, and Choate put the game away for good with a 4-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left for the final 27-18 score.
