READFIELD — The Select Board on Monday awarded a contract for fiscal 2018 road work to Cushing Construction LLC of Readfield, owned by John Cushing.
The award was recommended both by the town manager and the Road Committee. There were five firms bidding.
Cushing, who attended Tuesday’s meeting, said he planned to do the culvert work immediately and put the gravel on the roads next summer.
Cushing currently holds the town’s winter roads contract.
While his bid for the fiscal 2018 contract was $138,833.60, the final amount will be lower because at this point the town plans to have Pike Industries haul the material to the town, said Town Manager Eric Dyer.
The board opted to appoint Ellen Schneiter to a vacant seat on the town’s Budget Committee. Schneiter is a former state budget officer, finance commissioner and chief financial officer of the University of Maine at Augusta. She is currently deputy director of the nonprofit National Academy for State Health Policy, which has offices in Portland and Washington, D.C.
Schneiter said she has lived in town for about nine years, and now has some time to volunteer her services.
Two other people, both of whom spent three years on the selectboard, Tom Dunham and Allen Curtis, competed for the appointment.
All three addressed the board at the regular Monday night meeting.
Selectmen did not appoint anyone to an open seat on the Road Committee. Dunham had applied for that as well.
They agreed to sign a grant application put forward by Jerry Bley, a member of the town’s Conservation Commission. If the grant is awarded, it would help pay for trail infrastructure replacement in Torsey Pond Nature Preserve and the Fog Farm Conservation Area.
