Fort Halifax Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution held its Tea this spring to honor the Good Citizens from two high schools, the American History winner, Amiercan History Essay Contest winners at the Winslow Congregational Church.
Patty Poulin-Gorman, chairman of the Good Citizens Committee presented the awards to the following students.
Wyatt Hughes from Winlsow High School received the Good Citizen Award. He is the son of Susan and Andrew Hughes of Winslow.
Michaela E. Marden from Upper Kennebec Valley Memorial High School in Bingham was presented the Good Citizenship Award. She is the daughter of Erin and Joan Marden of Bingham.
Samuel Lambrecht from Winslow High School, the son of Bruce and Hilary Lambrecht of Winslow, was awarded the Jennie Paine Howard American History Medal. This awarded is presented to the top ranking student in American History.
The committee recognizes and awards a senior who exemplifies the qualities of a good citizen, service, dependability, leadership and patriotism. The recipient receives a pin, certificate and a wallet recognition card. This student is eligible to enter the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest by writing an essay on a topic that he or she are given only minutes before writing it.
The four elementary level American History Essay Contest winners are from St. Johns Regional Catholic School.
They are: Aryanna Cormier, from Benton, won first place in grade five, she also finished third at the state level. Colby Lewis, from Albion, placed first for grade 6; Aiden Warme, from Winslow, placed first for grade 7; and Dorothy Giroux-Pare, from Winslow, place first for grade 8.
This years topic was Celebrating a Century-America’s National Parks.
The students researched a national park and wrote a journal about the park as if they had visited it. Three judges chose the winning essays based on historical accuracy, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar and neatness.
First place essays were sent to the State DAR for judging at that level.
