Stephen Bannon, President Trump’s former chief strategist, is hoping to persuade Ann LePage, the wife of Maine Gov. Paul LePage, to run for the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Angus King, who is up for re-election next year, The New York Times reported Sunday.
Gov. LePage, who is serving his second term in the Blaine House and cannot run for re-election, went back and forth this summer about possibly challenging King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. But in late August, he told a gathering in Caribou that he wouldn’t run for the Senate.
Ann LePage has actively supported Maine’s military families during her time as first lady. She worked as a waitress in Boothbay Harbor in the summer of 2016.
