PHILADELPHIA — St. John’s defeated another of the nation’s elite, stunning No. 1 Villanova 79-75 on Wednesday night for its second win over a top-five team this week – and first over a top-ranked team in 33 years.
Shamorie Ponds scored 26 points to spark the Red Storm (12-13, 1-11 Big East) past the Wildcats (22-2, 9-2) for their first conference win of the season.
St. John’s beat then-No. 4 Duke 81-77 on Saturday, snapping an 11-game losing streak.
(2) VIRGINIA 59, FLORIDA STATE 55: Devon Hall scored 17 points and the Cavaliers (23-1, 12-0 Atlantic Coast) rallied in the second half to beat the Seminoles (17-6, 6-6) in Tallahassee, Florida.
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 82, WENTWORTH 80: Gavin Dibble made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2:29 left and finished with 16 points Tuesday night as the Nor’easters (10-12, 8-7 Commonwealth Coast) beat the Leopards (13-9, 9-6) in Boston.
Jackson McCoy added 12 points and Daron Hoges Jr. scored 10.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(1) UCONN 55, CENTRAL FLORIDA 37: Katie Lou Samuelson scored 19 points and Azura Stevens added 12 to help the Huskies (23-0, 11-0 American Athletic) beat the Knights (16-8, 8-3) in Orlando, Florida, despite their lowest point total of the season.
(4) LOUISVILLE 65, CLEMSON 46: Asia Durr scored 15 points to lead the Cardinals (25-1, 11-1 Atlantic Coast) past the visiting Tigers (11-14, 1-11).
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 68, WENTWORTH 65: Elyssa Nicholas scored 13 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday night as the Nor’easters (17-5, 13-2 Commonwealth Coast) rallied from a 15-point deficit against the Leopards (2-20, 1-14) in Boston.
