JACKMAN — The Neighbor Helping Neighbor network, which maintains a database of those in need and those who can volunteer to help others, has formed the Citizens Health Action Team. The team has combined the interests of supporting quality health care 24/7 provided by Penobscot Community Health Center at the Jackman Community Health Center and the MEHAF Achieving Better Health/Aging Project. The efforts are coordinated by the local project leader Denise Plante.
In 2016, Jackman was awarded a Maine Health Access Foundation grant with the goals of achieving better health in the town and to support The Aging Project. The town has joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, which “encourages communities to take action and pay increased attention to the environmental, economic and social features that encourage greater age integration and diversity and create a community that supports residents from the cradle through retirement.”
The network has worked on transportation, social gatherings, home care and home health/medical hospice.
The Citizens Health Action Team meets at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Jackman Town Office, 369 Main St. Anyone wishing to provide community leadership and advice in addressing issues related to public health and wellness in Jackman and the surrounding communities are welcome.
Community members can pick up forms at the Moose River Center, Jackman Town Office or can contact Plante, Somerset Public Health MEHAF Local Project Leader, at 668-9554, Deniseplante4040@gmail.com or P. O. Box 556, Jackman, ME 04945.
