Three truths need to be added to Mark Davis’ Commentary, “No doubt older teens have right to buy firearms,” March 4.
One absent truth is that “teens ages 16-19 are three times more likely than drivers older than 20 to be involved in a fatal crash, or any crash, for that matter, according to the insurance Institute for Highway Safety.” (Source: How to Cut Teen Insurance Rates)
Another absent truth is that the human brain gains full maturity no earlier than 23 years — the maturity that is essential for instantly doing all needs for safest driving. (Source: “Understanding the Teen Brain,” by University of Rochester Medical Center.)
Davis omits the fact that young military recruits undergo training before first firing a military weapon, and then with supervision.
