A Lewiston woman was badly injured Monday afternoon after police say that a car she was driving through East Winthrop on U.S. Route 202 careened into the back of a truck that was waiting to turn left, causing a three-car wreck that closed the busy road.

The woman, Deborah Salvador, 67, had to be extricated from her compact sport utility vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet HHR, and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with “serious injuries,” said Sgt. John Hall of the Winthrop Police Department.

Reached early in the evening, a hospital employee was not immediately able to provide information about Salvador’s condition.

“She needed to be extricated, and the extrication took a long time,” Hall said.

The three other people involved in the crash, two drivers and a passenger, were not seriously injured.

The crash, which happened just before 1 p.m. near the East Winthrop post office, caused traffic to be rerouted onto Old Village Road for some of the afternoon. By 4:30 p.m., the road was reopened.

Police are still investigating what caused Salvador’s car to hit the 2013 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Benjamin Lindsey, 22, Winthrop.

Lindsey, who had a passenger, was stopped and waiting to turn left into the post office at the time of the crash, Hall said. He had his turn signal on.

The rear-end crash pushed Lindsey’s truck into the westbound lane of traffic, where it struck an oncoming car, a 2015 Toyota Camry driven by Robert Stevens, 63, of Milford. All three cars were destroyed.

Stevens complained of pain and was treated at the scene by ambulance units, according to Hall. Lindsey and his passenger were also transported by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center, but they were released by the end of the afternoon.

The Monmouth Police Department, the Maine Department of Transportation, and the Maine State Police assisted at the scene, with the latter sending a team of investigators to reconstruct the crash. Fire and rescue workers from Winthrop and Augusta also went to the scene.

Hall was not able to provide any more information about what may have caused the crash, saying it was still under investigation.
