BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals for the third straight year Saturday, defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 5-1.
Bowdoin (21-1), which tied the school record for wins in a season, will meet Washington University of Missouri on May 21 at Claremont, California. The semifinals and final will be played the following two days.
The doubles teams of Kyle Wolfe/Jerry Jiang at No. 2 and Gil Roddy/Larry Zhao at No. 3 both won 8-5 to give Bowdoin a 2-1 lead heading to singles.
Jiang won 6-0, 6-2 at fourth singles and Grant Urken carried No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
TRACK AND FIELD
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Penn State junior Isaiah Harris of Lewiston won his 800-meter heat in Rosemont, Illinois, advancing to Sunday’s final.
Harris, the two-time defending conference champion, was clocked in 1 minute, 51.03 seconds.
SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Kate Hall of Casco was sixth in the long jump with a best distance of 21 feet, 2 inches, and Georgia teammate Keturah Orji broke Hall’s school record with a winning jump of 22-4 1/4 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Hall also qualified for Sunday’s 100-meter final by placing second in her heat with a time of 11.30 seconds.
BASEBALL
WESLEYAN 3, BATES 1: Connor Russell allowed six hits in 6 2/3 innings, but the Bobcats (14-19) fell to the Cardinals (22-15) in the NESCAC tournament at Hartford, Connecticut.
Wesleyan scored twice in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie.
Bates got a run back in the eighth when Justin White scored on Kyle Carter’s walk.
MAINE 8, ALBANY 7: The Black Bears (17-29, 11-10 America East) rallied from a 7-1 deficit and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to defeat the Great Danes (18-25, 8-13) at Albany, New York.
The Black Bears scored three in the seventh, including a two-run double by Cody Pasic, and added two unearned runs in the eighth to close to within 7-6. Hernen Sardinas doubled home Jeremy Pena with the tying run in the ninth.
