AUGUSTA — A Chelsea man was listed in fair condition at the hospital Tuesday after police say that he crashed a car along South Belfast Avenue late last week and suffered life-threatening injuries.
The man, 29-year-old Joey Cote, was driving east on South Belfast Avenue on Friday night when the car veered off the road, struck some trees and flipped onto its roof, according to the Augusta Police Department. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Cote then had to be extricated from the vehicle, a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero, and taken by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Cote’s injuries were life-threatening and he was taken to the intensive care unit, said Sgt. Christopher Blodgette in an email the next day.
At some point, Cote was released from Central Maine Medical Center and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. On Tuesday, a spokeswoman at the Bangor hospital said he was listed in fair condition.
The crash was reported at 10:35 p.m. Friday in the vicinity of 835 South Belfast Avenue, which is just west of Togus Pond, police said. The car was reportedly traveling east toward Windsor when it left the road, rolled down an embankment and flipped onto its roof after hitting some trees.
No charges are pending in connection with the single-vehicle accident, said Sgt. Christian Behr of the Augusta Police Department.
Earlier last week, police said that another man was injured when his motorcycle crashed along a different section of South Belfast Avenue.
The man, 48-year-old Alan Furlong of Augusta, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center with major injuries after the accident on Wednesday, Behr said last week.
Furlong was then taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where a spokeswoman said this week that he was listed in satisfactory condition.
