A Burnham woman is dead following a single-car crash on Estes Avenue in Palmyra in which the vehicle she was driving left the road and crashed into trees and rocks, according to a press release from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
Helen Hunt, 58, of Burnham, was driving a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer southbound around 142 Estes Ave. when the crash occurred sometime before 6:56 a.m. Saturday, according to the release, issued Chief Deputy James F. Ross.
Ross said deputies Dan Armiger and Cpl. Mathew Cunningham responded to the scene.
“Witnesses advised them that the vehicle left the road on the west side at full speed and crashed into trees and rocks,” the release says. “Hartland Fire Department and EMTs also responded to the scene.”
Hunt was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after the accident, according to Ross:
“Deputies were advised a short time later that Helen Hunt had passed away. It is suspected that Hunt may have suffered a medical event just prior to the crash. There was no evidence to indicate chemical impairment.”
He said Deputy Brian Crater is reconstructing the crash scene with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
