AUGUSTA — An Augusta man arrested on a charge of robbery over the weekend made his initial appearance in court Tuesday via video link from the Kennebec County jail.
Joshua Veilleux, 27, demanded money from an Augusta man and threatened to stab him Sunday in the parking lot of the Walgreens store on Water Street, police allege.
In his probable cause affidavit, Augusta police Officer Brett Lowell said police received a report of a robbery attempt at the Walgreens.
A man who had gone to the store to pick up ginger ale about 6:30 p.m. before Sunday’s football playoff game was waiting for a friend in the store parking lot when a man on a bicycle threatened to stab him and demanded money, according to the affidavit. When the man’s friend joined him, the man on the bicycle rode away.
Lowell said in the affidavit that he followed the tracks in the snow to an address on Water Street, where Veilleux lives. Police said Veilleux was wearing clothes matching the description of the suspect given by the victim.
In the affidavit, Lowell wrote that Veilleux said he thought the other man was going to try to steal his bicycle; but when Lowell interviewed the victim’s friend, the friend said he heard Veilleux make the threat and demand money.
Judge Cynthia Montgomery set bail at $1,000 with the condition that Veilleux have no contact with the victim or the witness in the case.
