Waterville Junior High School held its annual Geography Bee Jan. 9-10.
Seventh-grader Owen Libby, son of Jessica Libby and Jason Libby, is the school champion. Eighth-grader Peter Butera, son of John Butera and Laura Renick-Butera, is runner-up, according to news release from Julie Schoenthaler, grade 7 Social Studies.
The 26 top scorers from the school’s grades 6-8 social studies classes participated. The preliminary competition was held on the first day. Advancing to the final round were Sam Bernier, Peter Butera, Tyrell Buxton, Isabel Derosby, Finn Kelly, Owen Libby, Michael Lugo, Ailie Rancourt-Smith, Destiney Samare and Alex Turner.
Owen Libby has taken an online qualifying test at the junior high and hopes to qualify for the state geography bee held in April.
The “Bee Team” members included Lisa Evans, bee mistress; Janeice Holmes, judge; and Cam Bishop, timer and scorekeeper. Schoenthaler coordinated the bee.
