I don’t believe racism is the issue with Skowhegan’s Indain mascot, as Gerald Thibault said in his letter of Jan. 24 (“‘Indians’ not a racist term”).

I agree with Thibault — there seems to be little evidence of racism. The issue seems to be, “It’s always been that way, why change it?”

I must confess, I did not attend Skowhegan Area High School, but some of my siblings did. We should change the nickname because our Native American friends find the Indians mascot degrading.

They don’t like it. They are asking us to change it. It is long past time for a change.
