BRUNSWICK — The Messalonskee and Winslow girls won the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships Saturday at Bowdoin College.
The Eagles won the championship in Class A, their second in program history, with a total of 119.5 points over Edward Little (104.5) and Mt. Ararat (75.5). The Black Raiders nipped Belfast by just two points to earn the Class B crown, 98-96. Waterville (85.5) and Lawrence (68.5) finished third and fourth, respectively.
In boys competition, Brewer (Class A) and Belfast (Class B) won the team titles.
Charlotte Wentworth won the 400-metes to lead the Messalonskee girls contingent, which won its first KVAC title since 2017. Wentworth was the only individual winner for the Eagles, who relied on depth across all events to outscore the competition.
“We were strong going into it, and we were deep,” Messalonskee coach Matt Holman said. “It really was a total team effort. The girls are really excited about it, because they’ve put a lot of work into this.”
Peyton Arbour finished second in the 2-mile for the Eagles, and Alexa Brennan scored with a third-place finish in the 800. Emma Wentworth was second in both the 200 and 400, finishing runner-up to her sister in the 400.
For Winslow, Olivia Tiner won the mile and two-mile events in Class B. She also finished a close second in the 800. The Black Raiders’ team of Sadie Irza, Kaelyn Lakey, McKayla Fortin and Denali Norris won the 4×200 relay event.
Tiner joined Lawrence’s Payton Goodwin as the co-Dave Martin Female Athlete of the Meet. Goodwin won titles in the 800 and the long jump.
“We had some luck on our side, but we also had some kids that really ran well and challenged the competition,” Winslow coach Ken Nadeau said. “My goal is always to put kids on the podium, but the kids have to believe and work hard. The performances we had today were just unreal.”
In Class A, Anna Reny of Cony won the 200-meter championship for the girls.
In Class B girls, Waterville athletes won four individual championships. Sophia Poole (400), Sarah Cox (shot put), Timara Bell (high jump) and Lauren Pinnette (55 hurdles) were all victorious. On the boys side, Lawrence’s Alex Higgins won the shot put, Chance Graves of Nokomis won the 400 and Waterville’s Ethan Nurick claimed the top spot in the triple jump.
