Powerful winds buffeted northern New England on Saturday, causing several thousand power outages.
Meteorologist James Brown of the National Weather Service said a cold front brought blustery conditions to the region Friday night and Saturday.
He said gusts include a 56 mph recording in Meredith, New Hampshire, 53 mph on Matinicus off the Maine coast, and 51 mph in Bethel and Augusta, Maine.
But those pale in comparison to a peak gust of 148 mph atop New Hampshire’s Mount Washington. That’s the biggest wind recorded in over a decade at the Mount Washington Observatory.
There were scattered power outages across Maine. About 2,800 Central Maine Power customers and 1,700 Emera Maine customers were without power at 2:30 p.m. Saturday
Brown said the winds will begin diminishing in the afternoon. The National Weather Service wind advisory is due to be lifted at 6 p.m.
