BURNHAM — A local man was seriously injured in an ATV crash Saturday that occurred as his vehicle struck the rear tire of a second four-wheeler on Mount Road, police said.
Gerald Erving, 48, of Burnham, was operating a 2016 Yamaha four-wheeler in the vicinity of Box 42 on Mount Road when he struck the rear tire of a 2019 Can-Am operated by his son, Zachary Erving, said Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Matthew Curtis in a news release Monday.
The impact caused Gerald Erving to be ejected over the handlebars of the ATV he was operating and onto the road.
He was transported to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield and then flown via LifeFlight helicopter to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with life threatening injuries, Curtis said.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said Monday that Erving’s condition is critical.
Zachary Erving, 20, also of Burnham, was uninjured.
Neither man was wearing a helmet.
Speed and alcohol appear to have been contributing factors, according to Curtis, who said the crash remains under investigation.
Cpl. Darrin Moody is the primary investigator.
The Clinton Police Department responded to the scene to assist along with Sebasticook and Unity Ambulance Services and the Burnham Fire Department.
