A small car burst into flames around 9:40 a.m., Friday on the exit 112A offramp on Interstate 95 in Augusta.
Jason Farris, a battalion chief with the Augusta Fire Department, said when firefighters arrived, the engine of the Nissan sedan was engulfed in flames and the front of the passenger compartment also was on fire.
“The driver was about three-quarters the way down the ramp when she heard a popping noise in the engine compartment,” Farris said.
Farris said three people were in the car in addition to the driver, and none was injured; they waited at the Mattress Firm store, not far from the end of the exit ramp.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters put out hazardous-materials pads and absorbent materials in the event that any fluids spilled.
The Maine State Police also responded to a report of the incident.
